Alykes - Travel Guide

Alykes or Alikes is situated just 1km away from Alykanas and they share the same beach which stretches through both villages.  The village is situated just 18km or 70 minutes away from Zakynthos main capital town.

The area took its name after the salt works (: alykes), which used to supply the whole island with salt.  You can still see areas where the salt is still farmed and mined, but that industry has mainly since disappeared from the island, to be replaced by farming, fishing and tourism.

The resort has many shops, bars, restaurants and Taverna's, sure to suit everyone and has in particular a good reputation for having several fine fish restaurants. There is no need to recommend one other the other as they are all good and the fish is freshly caught daily.

If you walk towards Alykanas you will find the original village of Alykanas now called old Alykanas. There is a guide right here, but you will find both villages being so close are very similar with lovely sandy and rugged coastline to explore.

This charming village is near the coast, has retained its traditional Greek feel and has a handful of Tavernas and small bars ideal for those wishing to experience Zante as its supposed to be.

What to do in Alykes

The small resort of Alykes is perfect for a family holiday, the beaches are sandy and the beach shelves gently into the clear blue calm waters.  The beaches are well served with umbrellas and sunbeds to rent on a daily or weekly basis.  The sunbeds normally come in at around 2-3 euros for the day and can be rented from the beach bars or just by sitting on them and the beach owner will come and collect the money.

We’ve found out from a  few visitors to Alykes that if you try Havana at the end of the road on Alykes beach that they will give you the sunbeds for free as long as you buy drinks from the bar.  Seems like a good deal as long as you fancy a few beers on the beach.

There are a few beach front cafes serving up some excellent lunchtime snacks and drinks, and if you want to venture off the beach then there are more Tavernas and restaurants open on a daily basis.  If you want a lovely Taverna with excellent food and service then try Asteria Taverna on the beachfront and you can click here for a discount coupon for Asteria Taverna
.

For some well recommended restaurants try Eros Piccadilly restaurant and ANATOLIKOS Greek Taverna Which gets great reviews from tourists year after year.  We heartily recommend trying the wealth of fish dishes from freshly caught Tunas and Swordfish to the local Octopus and Calamari.  If fish isn't your thing there are plenty of meat dishes available and more child friendly dishes like pizza and chips are always on the menu.

For nightlife Alykes is well served with quiet cocktail bars and lounges, nothing too extreme just a great way of relaxing and watching the world go by while chatting to the bar owner or sipping a cocktail.  Three of the main bars in Alykes are Exotica Cocktail bar, Enigma cocktail bar and finally Iris bar.

If you looking for places to visit in Alykes then try Vertzagio Cultural Museum which covers 200 years of the islands history, set in the village of Pigadakia which sits very close to the town of Alykes.

If shopping is more your thing then Alykes is perfect with a wealth of gift shops, souvenir shops and the obligatory off licences selling all manner of duty free to take home from your holidays.   If you looking for peace and relaxation then the resort of Alykes is probably for you.

The coach transfer from Zante Airport only takes around an hour and 10 minutes, and is slightly faster if you hire a local taxi from the airport.
