The Blue Caves

The Blue Caves are in the north of Zante and are one of the best known sights on the island. They sit in the area of Skinari and Keri and there are endless tour operators and boat owners willing to take you there on a daily basis for about 15 to 20 euros.

These unusual caves were discovered in 1897, with the largest cave being called Blue Grotto. The caves are best accessed via a boat and you can easily book a trip to the Blue Caves on a daily basis weather permitting.

This area is excellent for diving and snorkelling and the colour of the caves has to be seen to be believed.

The name of the caves derives from the incredible blue colour of the water, which is due to the refraction of the light. The best time of day to see the caves is around midday with calm seas which allow the tiny sand particles to tint the sea.

The island offers exceptional attractions for divers. Many of the dive sites are cave dives around the island ; a wide range of marine life can be found, and common amongst it are moray eels, monk seals, octopus, and loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta).

Scuba diving trips can be organised locally with a travel agent and there are many professional scuba diving centres around Zakynthos.

Blue Caves Video and Pictures

Here you can find some amazing video footage of the Blue Caves in Zakynthos.  Also on the right hand side you will find a wonderful video of the Keri caves in Zante, we recommend taking a glass bottom boat, which are usually narrow and fit well into the caves so you can see everything underwater in the area.

You can also hire your own boat for about 4 hours and visit Keri caves as well as Marathonisi island or turtle island.
The videos last about 3 minutes each and give you a rough idea of the scale and wonder of these caves.  If you want to know more about the boat trips to the Blue Caves or the prices then please feel free to contact us.

If you have visited the Blue Caves and have some pictures you would like to share then please feel free to send them to us and we will upload them to the site.
